Only a specialist can prescribe a particular drugs. For example, only an anesthesiologist can prescribe pain medicine on a long term solution. Only a psychiatrist can prescribe mental health medicine. Only an optometrist can prescribe eye drops. I am sure you get the idea. This means that the most likely prescriptions a PCP (Primary Care Physician) will prescribe will be insulin, or temporary need medicine (such as eye drops for pink eye).
There will be no paper prescriptions. Instead, all prescriptions are sent to the pharmacy electronically. This is to prevent a bad actor from modifying the written prescription for something else. It also reduce paper waste, and improves efficiency. The only other solution is to prescribe the drug directly in the office. Obviously, the doctor needs to have the prescription in the office. If not, electronic prescriptions is the only solution.
