Sustainable Farming

One of the most important regulations will come in sustainable farming. This will include growing essential crops effectively. For one, there will be a need for variety in the crop landscape. If there was an environmental affliction on one particular line of crops, it won’t affect the whole ecosystem. The FDA will be in charge of pursuing options for more abundant and sustainable crops. This could then be sold to farmers at a little more than cost. Companies that engineer design their seeds will not be allowed to sell them to farmers. This will eliminate law suits against farmers that the wind blew some of the engineered seeds into their crops. These engineered seeds can be sold to the FDA which will in turn sell to the farmers.

Speaking of crops, 85% of the farmland must be used for consumption crops (corn, beans, and potatoes). 15% can be used for non consumption crop (such as switchgrass). By enforcing. this policy, there will be little competition for biofuel crops. The farmer will sow the crops that brings the best value for the crop. This means if there is a crop better than switchgrass for bio-fuels, then that crop can be used. It will be illegal to sell consumption crops for the production of biofuels. This will help assure that the food crop is affordable, and sustainable.

As for animal farming, there will need to be a process to make the lives of livestock as reasonable as possible. Also, animals will not be fed anti-biotics unless a veterinarian doctor prescribes the medicine for that particular animal. This will reduce the chance of drug resistant infections. When it is time for slaughter, it must be done humanely even if it might take a little longer. We should not punish a cow for being a cow. Also, the feed provided to the animal will have to be something that the animal would eat naturally. There is a reason why herbivores don’t eat meat. There will be a push for lab grown meat which will reduce the number of livestock need by a lot. This will be more humane for the animals in question as they are no longer caged up in a menial existence.
